How to Protect Your Home from American Cockroaches in the Austin Area

Introduction

The largest roach infesting Central Texas is the American cockroach, which was brought to North America from Africa in the 1600s by ships. These roaches can transmit around 33 types of bacteria, such as Salmonella and E. coli, by picking them up as they move through organic waste, trash, and sewage, with the bacteria sticking to their legs and bodies. They gain entry into buildings through openings in doors, plumbing, and walls. Although American cockroaches can bite, such incidents are seldom reported.

Identification

  • Size: Adults can range between 1 1/4" to 2 1/8" in length

  • Color: Body is reddish-brown with a yellowish band on their head

  • They have 6 legs and 2 antennae

  • Both males and females are fully winged

Signs of Cockroach Presence

American cockroaches deposit fecal matter in the areas they frequent, such as pantries, bathrooms, under sinks, cabinets, countertops, closets, garages, attics, and drains. Their droppings are characterized by being blunt on both ends with ridges on the sides. These droppings are sometimes confused with those of mice, so it is advisable to seek assistance from a licensed pest control company for accurate identification. Female cockroaches leave behind reddish-brown egg capsules called oothecae, which are typically around 8mm in length. These egg capsules can be affixed to surfaces in hidden locations using a mouth secretion. Each ootheca may contain 14-16 individual eggs. Under optimal environmental conditions, adult females can survive for approximately 440 days, while males can live for about 200 days. American cockroaches also emit a pheromone that gives off a musty odor in their nesting areas.

Controlling Cockroaches

To help minimize cockroach presence in and around your home, we suggest mowing lawns, clearing clutter near house foundations, and sealing plumbing openings under sinks and in outer walls. Maintaining clean kitchens and bathrooms can also deter roaches.
